HAUTBOYS.

HE "military band," as we understand the modern signification of the term, had its origin in the reign of Charles II. The tastes of this monarch were very much influenced by his residence in France, and on his accession to the English throne quite a new era begins for music in this country. French operas were played at court, and the services at the Chapel Royal were conducted similarly to those at
Versailles. A court band of twenty-four violins was also "instituted, in imitation of the " Vingt-Quartre
Violons du Roi" of Louis XIV,4 and even the military music of the French came under the covetous eyes of the "Merry Monarch." Their regimental bands com- |

'It is worth mentioning here, that the term " band," which
was applied to the French king's "violons," was also copied
by Charles, at least, we may infer as much, since the word is
used for the first time in relation to a body of musicians, in an
order relating to the English "violins" in 1GC1.
